RDS Library Speaker Series: James Wyse - The Forgotten Heroes of World War I

The British Government declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914 which started WWI. On that actual day, the British Army requisitioned the RDS Showgrounds in Ballsbridge through the Army Service Corps Remount Service. For the rest of the war until 1919 the RDS grounds acted as the only Base Remount Depot on the island of Ireland where animals were brought for assessment and training before being sent to England and Europe at the rate of over 1,000 per month.

In his talk James Wyse will pay tribute to over 65,000 animals including Irish donkeys/mules and horses that were deployed in WWI and the Irish people who handled them.

Aside from his professional career as an accountant and former MD of Citroen Ireland, James has also served on various Committees at the RDS. He has been involved with the Irish Donkey Society since 1993 and is currently Honorary Press Officer. He is an organiser and commentator at the annual donkey exhibition at the Dublin Horse Show and assists with commentary at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Balmoral Show.

His presentation will feature video and still images and relevant statistics relating to the role and use of equines during the war. He will also relate the stories of the few who returned to the Showgrounds to successfully compete in Horse Show competitions, including for the Aga Khan trophy.

This event is admission free and open to all, advance booking is required.
